Abstract
Objective: To correlate measurements of hypodense areas in third molars obtained using CBCT and MicroCT.
Methods: CBCT images of third molars indicated for extraction were analyzed to assess different parameters, including tooth length. Following extraction, the intact molars were scanned using MicroCT to obtain reference values (gold standard). Comparisons between the parameters obtained by the two methodologies were performed using statistical analyses for paired samples (Student’s t-test and/or Wilcoxon test).
Results: Tooth length measurements obtained using CBCT were, on average, 5% lower than those obtained using MicroCT, with a statistically significant difference observed between the two methodologies (p < 0.05).
Conclusions: These results indicate that CBCT has a lower capacity for resolution and definition of hypodense lines compared with MicroCT.
