Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the impact of pedagogical innovations included during 2023 on student performance in BBO3 and BBO4.

Methods: We compare the student performance of BBO3 and BBO4 in 2019 vs. 2023, before and after the development of four pedagogical innovations. These are: 1) access to audiovisual material prior to the face-to-face class; 2) change in the teaching methodology in the face-to-face class where students answer the guiding questions (also uploaded to EVA); 3) change in the weight of student oral participation during the class and 4) increase in PBL activities in BBO4.

Results: Increased the percentage of students presented in BBO3 exams (65% in 2023 vs. 50% in 2019) and in BBO4 (57.4% in 2023 vs. 18.9% in 2019 p<0.001). BBO4 exam scores were better in 2023 (p<0.01) and BBO3 exam scores were better in 2019.

Conclusions: Basic-clinical integration, which is one of the most important problems in the first years of the course, was improved. Students' presentation to final exams and unit grades were improved with more clinical orofacial content (BBO4).
