Abstract

Objectives: Several studies have demonstrated a relevant anatomical overlap between myofascial trigger points and acupuncture points. However, the possible correspondence between self-reported topographic patterns of temporomandibular myofascial pain and the trajectories of classical cephalic acupuncture meridians remains poorly explored. This study aims to analyze the topographic correspondence between pain areas reported by patients with temporomandibular myofascial pain and the main cephalic acupuncture meridians, as well as to explore treatment-related topographic changes and their relationship with pain intensity.

Methods: An analysis will be conducted using data obtained from a controlled clinical trial of acupuncture in patients with temporomandibular myofascial pain. Twenty-four patients who recorded their perceived pain areas on standardized anatomical diagrams of the head and neck (frontal and lateral views) before and after five acupuncture treatment sessions will be included. In parallel, anatomical templates depicting the trajectories of the main cephalic acupuncture meridians will be developed and validated by two experienced acupuncturists. An investigator blinded to participants’ clinical data will evaluate the topographic correspondence between pain areas and meridian trajectories. Additionally, the association between pain intensity (VAS), the extent of painful areas, and the number of corresponding meridians will be analyzed before and after treatment.

Expected Results: To determine whether consistent patterns of topographic correspondence exist between painful areas and specific acupuncture meridians, and to characterize their evolution following treatment.
