Abstract

Sleep bruxism has been extensively studied in recent decades, but considerable scientific controversy still persists in relation to awake bruxism. The present review focused on this topic, including 45 articles published between 2011 and 2020. International consensuses propose advances in new diagnostic classifications, which include tools such as questionnaires, clinical examination, electromyography, polysomnography, momentary ecological evaluation and experience sampling methods. Awake bruxism is considered a behavioral problem, which can be treated by behavioral therapies. The momentary ecological evaluation allows capturing behavioral information in real time and
is presented as a valuable tool for the diagnosis and evaluation of awake bruxism. Despite numerous advances presented in this review, studies are still required to explore this area of knowledge, especially in the pathophysiological mechanisms and their possible treatments.
