Abstract
External cervical resorption (ECR) is a relatively rare but very aggressive form of destruction of dental tissue. Despite the cases reported over decades and the clinical studies that have investigated them, their etiology is still unclear.
This work aims to identify potential predisposing factors related to the development of external cervical resorptions, for which a broad review of the available narrative literature was carried out.
Based on the available evidence, it is concluded that ECR are pathological processes with a multifactorial cause and the combination of predisposing factors seems to enhance the possibility of these processes developing. Dental trauma, orthodontic movements and internal whitening treatments with agents in high concentrations combined with heat application and incorrect chamber preparation, seem to be the factors most frequently related to the development of ECR.
