Abstract

This clinical case report presents a 7-yearold girl, diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1, who was treated at the Dentistry Clinic for Patients with Special Needs of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. Physical examination revealed a plexiform neurofibroma involving the upper eyelid of the right eye, causing ptosis, loss of vision, and facial asymmetry. Also, café au lait spots and freckles on the skin. On oral clinical examination, atresia of the upper dental arcade, active dental caries lesions and generalized presence of microbial biofilm on the dental surfaces and gingival bleeding were observed. All necessary dental treatments for the patient were carried out, with the appropriate care. We conclude that it is extremely important that dental surgeons have knowledge of neurofibromatosis and are prepared to be part of transdisciplinary health teams.
