Abstract
Objective: To know the sequence and chronology of dental emergence in 12-year-old Montevideo schoolchildren, with emphasis on the beginning of the second molar in relation to the replacement of the mesially located teeth. Materials and methods: this study was based on secondary data from an cross-sectional observational study, participation of 1136 schoolchildren. A questionnaire was applied for study with sociodemographic variables. The height and weight of each individual was measured, and the BMI was calculated. The clinical examination recorded the erupted permanent teeth. Results: The prevalence of sequence alteration was 2.03% (95% CI: 1.26-3.31) and the delay was 1.6% (95% CI: 0.89-3.2) of dental emergency. Schoolchildren with mothers with less than 6 years of schooling had a higher prevalence in the altered sequence. Overweight schoolchildren were 2% less likely to have a delay in the emergence of the second permanent molar (OR= 0.98 (0.97-0.99) p≤0.01) than those schoolchildren with normal weight. Conclusion: 2.06% of the schoolchildren presented an unfavorable sequence in which the second molar erupted before the canine or premolars. The schoolchildren presented a small delay in the initiation chronology, and this was related to nutritional status; overweight and obese children show a smaller delay compared to normal weight children.
